Why Us?

1 Garden Court is a leading and highly regarded family law set. All 79 of our members are family law specialists working within practice teams which include family finance, international and private child law, care and adoption and child abduction.

Members of 1 Garden Court undertake a broad range of work at all court levels. Chambers enjoys a reputation as a home to barristers who are leaders in their fields. We are regularly instructed in high profile cases that develop the law and advance procedure. 1 Garden Court was Jordan Family Law Chambers of the Year 2016 and is Legal 500 Family Law Chambers of the Year 2018.

Chambers takes care to provide first rate training and, with the help of our excellent clerking team, our pupils are very well supported to develop their work ‘on their feet’ through the 2nd six months, in preparation for an expected application for tenancy. Chambers seeks to recruit from its pupils each year and there is no artificial quota set for the number of new tenancies that will be offered. We recruit based on merit.

In January 2018, 1 Garden Court is moving to exceptional new premises at 10 to 11 Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Our new premises have been designed specifically for our needs and we will enjoy the most modern accommodation of any family law set in London.

Who should apply?

Candidates should be of proven academic ability, with an enthusiasm for family law. It is unlikely that applications will succeed with a degree classification of lower than a 2:1. We value diversity and look for potential.

Candidates should have taken steps to obtain work experience relevant to their application for pupillage at this set and provide evidence of advocacy experience. We are looking for talented individuals who demonstrate a commitment to the Bar and qualities which will enable them to get the best out of the training we offer.

When and how to apply

Chambers recruits through Pupillage Gateway.

Pupillage programme

Chambers offers up to two funded 12-month pupillages beginning in September each year. Pupillage is divided into three periods of four months on the basis that each pupil will have comprehensive exposure to all areas of Chambers’ work. There are regular seminars on wide-ranging areas of practice for pupils and junior tenants.

Chambers will fund pupils up to £27,500 per pupil per annum.

Our junior tenants are recruited, with rare exception from our pupils. We typically recruit two pupils with a view to recruiting two junior tenants, subject to merit and the availability of work.

Given our reputation and the quality of our pupillage training, we have found that those pupils who are not taken on as pupils usually find a third six or tenancy elsewhere.
